What Metal Detecting and Prospecting means to you.

What Metal Detecting and Prospecting means to you.

Metal Detecting and prospecting means different things to different people, we all have our own reasons for participating.

Our Hobby is constantly under attack from different groups as they get us mixed up with Mining. We are NOT Miners, but hobbiests that enjoy the outdoors and having a scratch in the dirt for shiny stuff.

We are often misunderstood and the powers that be NEVER get to hear from actual prospectors and detectorists about what the Hobby means to them.

We are talking about the Unseen benefits to Mental Well being, Health, Tourism, Small town economies and more. Its time these people learnt about the massive benefits that can be gained by letting us do our thing freely.

It's about gathering a ground swell of stories that we can show to the Authorities and the decision makers to try and get us access to more area's to get out there and enjoy the Australian Bush.

We want to show that prospecting and metal detecting is a benefit to both those that participate and those that live in Area's that are suitable for gold based tourism.

Well we want to hear those reasons and Once a month we will Draw a prizepack from those that shared below.

Simply Leave a comment on this Post and explain in as few or as many words as you like what it means to be able to you to go prospecting or metal detecting.
What benefits you gain and maybe even what you believe you bring to the communities you visit.

Let's show the people that make decisions WHY we do what we do.

Clegy.

P.S it is also very Important that you join your local prospecting association.

I,ve been detecting since the mid 80s, my best find is a NSW military force belt buckle,. I’ve found a few rings fora few people over the years.the amazing thing about this hobby is you never know what history you dig up and save

What it is about metal detecting that so satisfying.
My name is Spiros Nikolopoulos and I live in Sydney, quite a busy place with all the pressures of work especially driving a truck in treacherous traffic can be really draining at best of times.
12 + hours a day, 6 days a week and what little time I have left over to do other necessities before I can even sit down with my wife and kids can really put you out of perspective as to why we do what we do to try and get ahead in life.
It doesn’t take much to fix all that, the drive to a random location, the smell of fresh air, the sounds of the Bush and a running stream in front of a camp fire, to actually have a meaningful discussion whether it’s your own family or even a friend is the best therapy I can recommend especially when your feeling drained from whatever it is you do.
It’s not necessarily the gold you might find that makes you rich but everything else that comes with it, if your sluicing, panning or detecting its those moments of friends and family helping each other, the conversation you have and the wonderful memories, you don’t get any of that thought modern technology and It’s unfortunate that most people have become reliant too.
It’s not just a hobby, its not just the gold it’s everything else it does for myself and others around me. I’ve taken friends out who would not normally leave the luxuries of there home to now constantly asking when are we going again because of what joys this hobby has given them and there family’s as well, every time we go it’s always a different experience, talking about what’s bothering you, if it’s work, family or even just switching off from our daily pressures and just enjoying life for what it is this has to be one of the best hobbies to be involved in, you my not always find gold but the moment’s it gives you are always golden.

What it means to me? Just being in the outdoors listening to water following through the creeks and rivers, hearing the birds, educating my children on our history by finding coins & relics from the past. Spending money in our small towns that survive on our tourism dollar is a great feeling as well.
Also it’s just so peaceful and great for my metal health. Finding gold, relics or gems is just a bonus.

I go prospecting to help with mental emotional and stress relief and to meet new folks with similar interests

Detecting is just a great way to get a little exercise and maybe find some treasure, it’s my favourite way to relax.
